About

The China Cross-Border Monitor uses a transaction-based methodology to create a clear picture of China’s overseas investments and business presence.

China Cross-Border Monitor logo

Rhodium Group’s China Cross-Border Monitor aims to increase transparency on China’s global investments and economic footprint. Traditional statistics capturing outbound FDI by Chinese companies are distorted by tax optimization and capital controls, creating a skewed picture of China’s overseas investments. Our transaction-based methodology tracks more than half a million individual investments worldwide, helping create a more transparent view of China’s global investment footprint.

In line with the our mission to increase the transparency of China’s overseas economic footprint, CBM data is available to the public free of charge. Users can break down the data by geography, industry, investor, and other variables so the output fits their research needs. Our dataset can provide answers to questions as broad as “how much Chinese investment is there in Germany” to “how many greenfield automotive investments did Chinese firms make in Morocco in the last four years?”

If you need help navigating the site, our user guide explains the functions of our platform and how to filter the data to suit your needs. Read more here.

CBM Plus

A CBM Plus account offers more granular data access for research collaborators and partners. Registered users have access to our interactive data tables, which allow customizable views of data, details of individual transactions, and detailed investor mapping. Our granular data empowers researchers, journalists, and other partners to increase transparency on Chinese outbound FDI patterns and analyze specific public policy questions, such as potential positive local spillovers from Chinese investment, economic and national security risks for host countries, the behavior and strategy of emerging Chinese multinationals, and the impact of Chinese investment on global FDI policy and governance.
